Bishop Battle has made many professional achievements and has worked very hard serving his community. Some of his professional achievements are: CEO of the Battle Corporation; member and served as President of the Charoltte-Mecklenberg Board of Education. He was elected a school board member in 1978 and became the chairperson in 1990. He served until 1995 when he resigned because of his duties as bishop. He serves on the board of Wachovia Bank Board; member, Visitors Board for the University of North Carolina Charlotte; member, Executive Board of the World Methodist Council; member; Billy Graham Evangelism Board; member, Samaritan’s Purse Board; member, Minority Initiative Task Force; past - panelist, National Humanities Center, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, panelist for the Morehead Scholarship; member, Board of Directors for Carolinas Healthcare System; member, Strategic Planning for Carolinas Healthcare System; member, Carolinas Healthcare System Foundation; Chair of the Pension Committee and Retirement Committee which oversees more than a half billion dollars for the Carolinas Healthcare System; member, Advisory Board for Technical High Schools of Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools; past - member, Executive Board for the United Way of the Carolinas; member, Board of Directors for the United Way of the Carolinas; member, Trustee Board of Central Piedmont Community College; member; Selection Committee for the Ben Craig Award for Teacher and Principle of the Year for First Union National Bank; member, Executive Board for Global Transpark Foundation, Inc; served as member of the Charlotte Mecklenburg School Board for 17 years (serving as chair for 5 years). Bishop Battle’s civic and community involvements include: Founder of the Greater (formerly Gethsemane) Enrichment Program that received a national award for the best program of its kind utilizing federal funds (now in existence for over 28 years); Founder/Member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Alliance for Public Schools; member, The Congress of National Black Churches, Inc.; member, River Run Club; member, Leadership Breakfast Group in Charlotte, North Carolina; one of the Founders/member of the Urban League of Central Carolinas; organizer of the Biddleville Five Points Community, such as boy scouts which led to major improvements in housing, parks, sidewalks, etc.; member, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; member, Advisory Board Museum of the New South; recipient of awards from the Charlotte Post Man of the Year Award, National Conference of Christians and Jews Award, Charlotte Observer Thank You Award for years of service on the school board, Ministers and Layman Association of the Sojourner Truth Award, Whitney M. Young Service Award for Boy Scouts; member, Salvation Army Advisory Board. Bishop Battle has received numerous honors and awards during his outstanding career. He was recognized for exemplary service and dedication by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education; received the Echo Award Against Indifference; received the Razor Walker Award; won the Gold Award; and was recognized by the State Board of Community Colleges for service to the citizens of North Carolina; received the Presidential Award for Outstanding Leadership from Livingstone College; National Award for Meritorious Service from Livingstone College National Alumni; The Whitney M. Young Service Award for the Mecklenburg County Council Boy Scouts of America; Black Political Caucus Hall of Fame Award; supporter of Public Radio; received the Long Leaf Pine Award from Governor James Hunt; recipient of the Clergy of the Year 2001 from the National OIC of America. Bishop Battle is affiliated with the following organizations: Charlotte City Club; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; Sigma Psi Phi; National School Board Association; State School Board Association; Christian Ministers Fellowship Association; and the National Council of Churches.
Profile
Bishop George Edward Battle, Jr., was born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina to George and Mary I. Battle and is one of eight children. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Clinton Jr. College in Rock Hill, South Carolina in1966, with an Associate Degree. He also graduated from Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina, with a B.A. Degree. Bishop Battle also holds a Master of Divinity Degree from Hood Theological Seminary which is also located in Salisbury graduating Magna Cum Laude. He earned a Doctor of Ministry from Howard University in Washington, D.C. He has also received honorary doctorate degrees from Clinton Jr. College, Hood Theological Seminary, Livingstone College, Queens College, and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Bishop Battle began preaching in 1966 at St. Matthews African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Rock Hill, South Carolina and was admitted to the South Carolina Annual Conference in 1967. He was ordained a Deacon in 1967 and an Elder in 1968 by Bishop Joseph Dixon Cauthen. Bishop Battle’s pastorates included; Center Grove (Circuit), Tobaccoville, North Carolina, November 1966; Mt. Vernon (Circuit), Statesville, North Carolina, December 1966; Foundation Tabernacle (Circuit) 1968-72; Mt. Zion, Lancaster, South Carolina 1972-74; and Gethsemane, Charlotte, North Carolina, 1974-92 from which pulpit he was elected Bishop. He was consecrated the 84th Bishop in succession at Shaw Temple A.M.E. Zion Church, Atlanta, Georgia, during the 44th General Conference on July 31, 1992. As bishop, he has presided over the Palmetto, Pee Dee, Georgia, South Georgia, and South Carolina Conferences 1992-1996, and the Central North Carolina and North Carolina and Virgin Islands Conferences after the death of Bishop Herman Leroy Anderson in 1995. In 1996, he was assigned the Eastern North Carolina Episcopal District which comprises the Albemarle, Cape Fear, Central North Carolina, Virgin Islands and North Carolina. He presently presides over the North Eastern Episcopal area of which Bahamas Islands, New England, New York and Western New York encompasses his Episcopal Area. He manifests unusual administrative ability. Bishop Battle is Chairman of the International Budget Board of the A. M. E. Zion Church, First Vice Chairman of the A. M. E. Zion Church Publishing House and Vice Chairman of the Department of Evangelism. He is a member of the Board of Trustees at Livingstone College, Life Patron Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society and of the International Laymen Association of the A. M. E. Zion Church. Bisop Battle is married to the former Iris Miller and they have two children, George, III and LaChandra, a daughter-in-law, Renita and two grandsons, Glynn Paul Edward Hubbard, III (Trey) and Richard Alexander Hubbard and one granddaughter Payton Battle.
